Who Should Actors Trust? Casting Directors, Producers, Directors, Talent Agents?

In this video we here at Hack Hollywood consider who actors should trust. There are so many people on the internet, in casting director workshops, former casting directors making a living now by selling their services as consultants, talent agents writing articles on acting websites like backstage.com and it’s normal for an actor to be confused.

Click on the link to see the only person an actor can really trust at the end of the day.

00:10
another awesome coronavirus Cova 19
00:13
video but of course it’s applicable at
00:15
any time of year but since we are going
00:17
through such a strange time and you know
00:20
I have to say I am guilty of the fact
00:22
that I’ve been watching way too much
00:24
news which I swore I would not do
00:25
because I remember when 9/11 happened it
00:28
made me depressed for months in fact I
00:31
don’t know if I ever got back to the way
00:33
I was before and you know just a more
00:35
serious person now so for those of you
00:38
who didn’t really go through 9/11 you
00:39
know maybe you can’t relate to that yet
00:42
but maybe you will relate to it after
00:44
you know 30,000 50,000 a hundred
00:46
thousand people died just in the United
00:48
States alone possibly so anyway the
00:50
question is who should you trust during
00:53
a pandemic an epidemic a gigantic global
00:57
problem and how does that translate into
01:01
who you should trust in your acting
01:04
career now first of all I should let you
01:06
know I’ve been out playing a little disc
01:08
golf practicing I’ve got several discs
01:13
but anyway that helps me get a lot of
01:18
this stuff off my mind and just makes me
01:21
feel more normal even though you know I
01:24
could get kicked out of the park at any
01:25
time I’m kind of hiding right now but
01:28
anyway who you should trust well let’s
01:30
let’s look at the coronavirus I mean if
01:32
you listen to Cuomo the governor of New
01:36
York he’s got one opinion and then
01:39
you’ve got the president Donald Trump
01:40
who’s got another opinion the two
01:43
opinions are diametrically opposed and
01:46
you have to ask yourself well who do you
01:47
trust and the answer is well don’t trust
01:53
anyone
01:53
don’t trust anyone except for yourself
01:56
because everyone has ulterior motives
01:58
okay I mean let’s just look at you know
02:01
Cuomo is a Democratic governor his
02:06
brother his father was the governor of
02:08
the same state New York his brother is
02:10
on CNN which is a very liberal leaning
02:12
News news outlet I don’t know I’m sure
02:16
they would argue with me but it’s pretty
02:17
plain and so they’re Democrats right and
02:21
there’s upcoming elections in November
02:23
so you know even though I trust them
02:27
maybe more than the other guy they also
02:31
have ulterior motives they yeah sure
02:34
they care about people but that’s
02:35
typical more of Democrats they’re more
02:38
you know worried about everybody being
02:41
okay whereas you know Republicans tend
02:43
to be more hey take care of yourself
02:45
good luck to you you know
02:47
congratulations if you do well and make
02:50
billions and if you don’t do well and
02:52
you suffer well you only have yourself
02:54
to blame whatever not commenting on
02:57
what’s better just noticing the two
03:00
differences right and that’s how you
03:02
have to make judgment calls is what is
03:05
their traditional position on things and
03:08
why are they giving you this opinion
03:11
because when you ask somebody their
03:12
opinion they will give you one it’s
03:14
almost inevitable people love to give
03:16
their opinions so same thing in acting
03:19
when you ask somebody your their opinion
03:22
about what you should be doing with your
03:23
acting career for instance you know if
03:26
you ask a casting director what to do
03:27
with your acting career they’re gonna
03:28
tell you things if you ask a producer
03:31
they’re gonna tell you things if you ask
03:32
another actor
03:33
they’re gonna tell you things
03:35
everybody’s gonna tell you something
03:37
different and I’m not even talking about
03:38
casting directors producer directors
03:40
actors I’m talking about each single
03:42
individual will have their own viewpoint
03:44
and of course they’re giving it as
03:46
though all actors are the same okay so
03:48
they’ll just give them the same
03:50
instructions like you should send
03:51
postcards well what if I look terrible
03:53
in photographs but I look good on camera
03:55
that’s me I mean well I don’t even know
03:58
if I look good on camera but it’d look
03:59
terrible in photographs because I’m so
04:00
pale so it’s really hard to get a camera
04:03
to take the picture of me where I you
04:06
know either my are either too dark or my
04:09
skin’s too light and anyway so listen
04:12
you’ll get all these opinions and then
04:13
you get all caught up in that and you’re
04:14
like oh my gosh I’m trying to do what
04:16
they told me to do and it’s not working
04:17
so it must be me no it’s not you the
04:19
problem is you’re not paying attention
04:20
to yourself so who do you listen to
04:23
listen to yourself and listen to the
04:26
facts and then listen to who’s telling
04:29
you the facts as to whether it’s really
04:32
a fact or if they are skewing the facts
04:34
slightly because the same set of facts
04:37
can mean two different things to
04:38
different people again back to the
04:40
coronavirus 10,000 20,000 30,000 dead to
04:43
the governors of those states that have
04:45
the deaths it’s like oh my gosh it’s the
04:47
worst thing in the world imagine to the
04:48
families who the people who are dying
04:50
they’re the set of facts is awful
04:52
terrible to the president he’s like
04:55
these are numbers we got to get the
04:56
economy going because I got an election
04:58
coming up and if the economy goes down
04:59
the toilet because maybe I didn’t
05:01
prepare enough for this or I didn’t get
05:03
the ventilators out or you know I blamed
05:05
China or whatever and now the Democrats
05:07
are gonna use it against me I’m not
05:09
gonna get reelected right so listen to
05:12
the facts but listen to who’s telling
05:13
you the facts and then make a judgement
05:16
about it and still completely decide for
05:20
yourself because really you are the only
05:22
one whose viewpoint matters it doesn’t
05:25
matter what any casting director thinks
05:26
about what you should do it doesn’t
05:28
matter what any producer or any other
05:29
actor or anybody else what matters is
05:31
what do you want to do and what is it
05:34
that you have going for you that’s gonna
05:36
help you get there okay guys so who do
05:39
you trust you trust yourself there’s
05:41
really nobody else who knows you well
05:43
enough to give you an accurate
05:45
assessment of what it is you should do
05:48
whether it’s what you should do for the
05:51
coronavirus or what you should do with
05:54
your acting career of course we are a
05:56
community as society actors are sort of
05:59
a community it’s more like the
06:00
entertainment community we are also a
06:02
society of humans who have to survive
06:05
this thing so there are certain things
06:07
that you’re probably going to want to do
06:10
to act as a group to protect the entire
06:15
group right we can’t just run around
06:16
doing whatever we want even though
06:18
that’s what some people think they
06:20
should be able to do so there is a
06:22
certain community aspect like you can’t
06:24
just run amok and act like you know what
06:29
do you call it our arc arc
06:33
okay the only word you know those people
06:35
who don’t believe in government I can’t
06:39
think of the word for it whatever I’m
06:40
sure you’re you’re going it’s this it’s
06:43
that not archaea not guys I can’t think
06:46
of the word anyway you know there goes
06:47
my brain anyway there it is guys who
06:50
should you trust if it comes to the
06:52
coronavirus if it comes to your acting
06:54
career
06:54
trust yourself but and when you’re
06:57
trusting yourself and thinking what you
06:58
should do please don’t keep in mind
07:00
don’t base it on what other people have
07:02
told you come up with what seems like a
07:05
logical plan for yourself and then just
07:06
go for it
07:07
trust me you’re gonna fall all over the
07:09
place you’re gonna plow nor you’re gonna
07:10
make a fool of yourself that’s great
07:12
because when you you may you’ll feel
07:14
like a bigger fool than anybody else
07:16
feels like you are they’ll just be like
07:17
you know that’s too bad we hope that
07:20
that person was the right person for our
07:22
acting job but they weren’t because they
07:25
either weren’t good enough they weren’t
07:26
prepared enough or they’re just not
07:27
right for the part so don’t worry about
07:30
it everybody’s gonna have your opinion
07:31
do what’s right for you guys and I will
07:34
talk to you on the next one
