Blog Post #112: What Is The Best Way To Give A Thank You Note?

Here is a question that comes up all the time and one that should actually never come up. The only reason it does is fear. Most actors are terrified of the other people who work in entertainment. Because of this fear, they are always trying to coddle and appease and not ruffle the feathers of basically anyone who they perceive has power over them. This doesn’t work with dictators and it doesn’t work with Casting Directors. Get in front of them and sell baby!

Hacktor Question: I recently attended a dinner with a guest speaker, who is a producer. I would like to send a simple “thank you for coming to speak” note, but I’m wondering if it would be best to send an actual, physical note or an email? Both options seem available on IMDb. Thoughts?

David’s Answer: I think the more personal touch would be a hard copy, and even better would be to hand deliver it. If you have a plan for wanting to be of service to this individual, you could ask for that when you drop it off. Even if you don’t get to see him/her, you can speak to the front desk person and have a charming little conversation with them and asking them to join your little conspiracy to work with them. Engendering the help of others at the company can be of huge help since they are instructed to keep people away from the leaders of the company. But if they like you, they can actually help you break the ‘rules’ and get what you came for.
