Blog Post #105: What Do You Work On In-Between Auditions?

There are a lot of down times for an actor. Auditions can come few and far between. So what to do other than claw your eyes out or reach for a tasty beverage? What you do in your down time might make the difference between having, and not having, any downtime at all…

Hacktor Question:

Just wondering how and what many of you do to stay ready in your off time from auditioning and acting. I assume many of you do workshops, but I am also wondering about individual ideas you might personally do, like learn a monologue and perform it, or other acting activities. I am looking at this in the same way an athlete trains when he or she are not playing. I am looking to build up my acting chops and keep them sharp. I appreciate all the ideas, and hopefully something in there inspires you into more action as well!

David’s Answer:

Thanks for the post.  I would keep it very simple…work on your weaknesses. Which areas of your game hold you back and leave you with less than total confidence? That is really the only thing separating the working vs non-working actors, confidence backed up by skills. If you have those, you can do whatever you want to do. Also, for myself it is to really get lost in the world I create before doing the memory work. If you are clear on the situation or scenario in which the scene takes place, the memorization comes much more easily.
