Actors wonder what they should be doing to further their career but almost every actor I have studied with is nowhere close to being ready should an opportunity come up. If you were praised in class for work you did that took a week to prepare, learn to do that work in a few hours. Basically the standard for professional auditions is a few hours. Sure, the union says you get 24 hours but you want to be able to be ready to go on a moment’s notice. For my first professional audition, I was given two hours notice and that included printing out the sides and driving to the audition…and I booked it (not sure how, lol). Here’s a little advice from a question I had not that long ago…
Hacktor Question:
What are some acting exercises that I can do to sharpen my skills apart from joining an acting workshop?
I recommend getting together with fellow actors and memorize scenes and do mock auditions. Audition for anything you can. That will force you to memorize as much material as possible. I’m sure if you Google the topic there are hundreds of exercises out there. There is also class. Class teaches you something. Workshops don’t really teach, they are a performance. Work on your emotional preparation. I personally like walking around trying to make myself laugh, cry, be angry, joyful, all emotions so they come easily. Whatever is hardest for you is what you should be working on to give you confidence that when it comes up, you’ll be prepared.
