Should I Submit To Projects If I’m Not Currently In That City?

Hacktor Question:
I’ve been told I shouldn’t submit to projects/agents if I’m not in LA yet. Is that true?

David’s Answer:

Who told you not to submit? They’re crazy. They are casting people from all over the world now.  I’ve read for stuff in New York while in LA, and I’ve read for stuff in LA while in Vancouver and Toronto. They love that you might not be available. Hollywood has the worst case of “I want what I can’t have” in the world.

If on the small chance one of your subs gets you a call and you’re out of town, just tell them you’re shooting something and you’ll call them when you’re done if it’s not time sensitive and if it is, oh well…submit again when you arrive. Trust me, no one remembers anything like that.  Who has the time and they just want to find good actors so if they think you’re good, so what if you can’t make an audition or a meeting? That only means you are busy, which is a good thing. Better to be hard to reach than needy!
