I’m A Guy – Should I Wear Makeup To An Audition?

Here’s a question about makeup but to me, it’s more a question about distractions. Many actors get wrapped up in the minutia of their careers, rather than the fundamentals. Do any of you actually think that makeup is going to get them the job or do you think that if you do a spectacular audition, that they will even notice if you look tired or not?

Hacktor Question:

This may be an odd question, but do any of you guys wear make up for your audition? I just did a self taped audition and was looking at the footage. I looked so tired (compared to how I felt) and it made me wonder how much of that has an effect on whether I book a job or not. After looking at the takes, I put on some foundation under and around the eyes and the takes ended up looking so much better. I realize it’s vanity, but this is a visual art. Dave, what are your thoughts? Do casting directors talk about how the actor looked on camera, or do they figure they’ll be made up on set, it doesn’t really matter?

David’s Response:

That’s a great question and by all means if it makes you look better and feel more comfortable/confident, be a cover girl(guy)!  I used to worry about that kind of stuff more than I do now. I don’t know why, but I find that a lot of these things can make you nervous or distracted from what is really important.  I think in commercials, looks are more important, and in TV/film, it is less so.  It also varies from show to show, so try to get a sense of what you are reading for and you can fine tune what you do along all lines.  Makeup is just one of many considerations to take into account as an actor.  The more  you know, the better you will fit the part, so do all the things you can to fit into the project.  That can include makeup, realism, speed of speech, etc.  Look at who you’re auditioning for and try to get a sense of their sensibilities and match them.  They will then feel like you get them and they will respond to you.
