How Can I Get Casting Directors To Take A Second Look At Me?

Just a quick reminder (if you didn’t already know) that our impression of our performances are far larger in our minds than they are in the minds of others, so don’t be too hard on yourselves. Whatever’s wrong, just fix it and reload!

Hacktor Question:

I just had a question about making a new impression on casting directors. I feel I may have left a bad impression with some casting directors because I wasn’t ready/prepared enough to be in front of them. While I understand that first impressions often say a lot, surely they must believe that even bad actors are going to look to get better. My question is if there is a way to get them to take a second look at you? Is it simply a matter of booking roles and getting them to notice you that way, or are there other ways? Perhaps if they feel you have gotten significant training since they last saw you, that you may warrant a second look?

David’s Answer:

The short answer is, of course there is. Trust me when I tell you that the impression you made on a CD is much stronger in your mind than in their mind. Give it a few months, they will forget it for the most part and will likely give you a second chance, albeit maybe in a smaller role. If your agent is submitting you, ask them to call on your behalf (if you’re sure you’re going to kick butt) and and suggest you for the role. If the CD balks, tell them you’re a much better actor now or you just had a personal issue that day.

Another method is to approach the CD personally. Drop into their office and ask for an audition…either for a role or a general. Again, you must be sure you’re really at the level you claim to be or it’s pointless. If you’re really ready, then pop in and say “Hi, I haven’t read for you in a while and I’m really ready to kick some butt.  How can I get an audition?” You better be really enthusiastic and believable or they won’t believe it. Ask for five minutes of their time. They always need new actors so you’re doing them a favor. Just be happy, enthusiastic, and good! If they say no, pop in in another few weeks with the same approach. No matter what they say or do, you can’t get bitter or mean or negative. If you don’t get the audition, it’s just a delay, not a failure…you just keep working at it…until you get what you want. Stress has no room in this game.  You have to cool, calm and confident…believing in yourself…if you don’t, no one else will either.
