Getting a talent agent or ‘making the world a better place’

diving-actingHere’s a post a member made in the Hack Hollywood community…

Oh my god!! I just got back from the trip to Atlanta. I loved it!

I went to drop off my headshots and resumes in person instead of doing it online. I went to five of the top agencies up there. I thought it would just be a drop off and I wouldn’t be able to talk to anyone. But no. I was able to chat with some of the agents themselves. And by the way, they are all super nice. And all super open to representing talent outside of the state. They say since everything is done online nowadays, we don’t have to live there. We just have to be able to work as locals, (which I can since I have family up there I can stay with). Anyway, I have a good feeling about these. I’ll just stay positive and hope something comes out of it. Meanwhile, I am still working in my hometown looking for auditions for myself. I have an audition this upcoming week for an independent film. I’m excited about that! Just wrapped up my tv/film class which I am definitely gonna miss. And of course, still going through the modules. I am loving life right now!!

All these things we would never discover if we didn’t take steps into the unknown. You never know until you try and the risks of not trying far exceed those of trying. The worst you would have gotten is a no, while because you tried, you are going to have representation out of your home state, no small feat!

I can promise you no one else even knows these techniques exist. Most actors would be way too terrified to actually drop in on an agent, let alone one in a different state so you are way ahead of the game by that tally alone.

That’s so true Krystal. You mail in submissions to who knows who and you get repped by someone who doesn’t sync with your values, but if you go see them, you instantly know if you even want them to represent you and you can tell them if you feel good about them and agents need love too…so remember that these things I try to get you guys to do are far more impactful than you may think at first glance.

David, you’re so right. Most actors just mail in submissions or do online submissions, but meeting them in person really goes a long way. It also helped me get a feel for the agents themselves and what kind of business they run. Some of them I didn’t get so good of a vibe from and some I got great vibes from. So that was also my way of “interviewing” them per se. You know?

Think beyond what you are getting out of these interactions. Think of what you can give to the world, every single moment. You can give and get at the same time and frankly helping others feels a lot better than someone helping you because that is why we are given so much capacity and ability. We can’t spend all our time doing stuff for ourselves. We have so much excess capacity for doing so do for others and the world will be a better place and then you are making your own life better by making others lives better because you get to live in the better world you are creating.
