Do you need a MFA in Acting to become successful in Hollywood?

Hacktor Question:

Do you need a MFA in Acting to become successful in Hollywood? Does learning Shakespeare help your acting skillset get the type of roles that you want in Hollywood?

David’s Answer:

OMG no. I don’t know if an MFA has any bearing on your success in anything. A degree is just a degree, and from what I know of MFA’s, they don’t offer a lot of practical career advice. That’s more or less why I created Hack Hollywood. Until now, no one teaches actors how to actually get what they want or to even think about what they want before they can go after it.

I’m not sure of the exact reason why one would do an MFA, but it is probably the last thing i would recommend if one wants to pursue a career in Hollywood or anywhere else for that matter. There are no practical skills you can learn at school to assist in your acting career, other than the acting training itself and you can get that anywhere…no need for a degree. In the two years it takes to do an MFA, you could become a rockstar in your acting career. Do the MFA, and you are still at square one. It’s not like an MBA where you can walk into a high level job after graduation and there are placement services. The only placement there is for actors is casting, so unless your school casts movies and television, after graduation, you’re on your own.
