Here’s a question that comes up quite often. There seems to be two ‘policies’ in place in New York and Los Angeles regarding representation. The question reveals how afraid we actors are of upsetting the ‘industry’ because we think they are paying attention to our every move. They aren’t thinking about us. They don’t even know we are out there unless we draw attention to ourselves, which we should. Better to be known for something bad than not known at all. You can work with negative publicity. You can’t do anything with no publicity…anyway here are the specifics…

Why is it that in New York you can have many agents, but in Los Angeles, only one?
Actually you can have multiple agents in LA, and I have had up to four submitting me for the same projects. Of course actors are the ones saying you can or can’t, but the agents usually don’t even know about it. I’ve never had agents ask me to sign contracts, and I always figured that two or three submissions is better than one and to a CD, so what’s the difference? It’s not like they are going to stop what they are doing and stop the presses to call your agents and tell them you’re represented by more than one. They have thousands of headshots and little time, so who cares? If you have a contract, of course you have to abide by it, but otherwise you are free to use as many as you want. In six years, I got two appointments for the same spot only one time and that one time, they just figured it was their mistake. I know actors are terrified of pissing off the industry, but they really don’t have time to pay attention to you that much. If you get asked about it, just say you were on a trial basis with both and was making up your mind or that you don’t have a contract so you have to CYA.
