Auditions can be a very stressful part of acting. In fact some people never get comfortable in them and I’ve met extremely successful actors who used to freak out during auditions.
Sometimes you might have a lot of material and not a lot of time to prepare it and you might worry that you are going to lose your way. While it is true, that in the film/show itself, there is no way to hide any bad performance because the focus is placed on the entire story.
In the audition however, it is possible to be a winner by only focusing on a small part of the material…in particular the beginning of each scene. There are lots of reasons for this, but let’s look at one way you can overcome all this stress by focusing on one simple rule; the first moment is undoubtedly the most important in any audition.
Here are three reasons why you should focus on the first moment and start strong…
- It sets the tone for you internally – if you are at the right point emotionally, it will be very hard to lose your way since you are already aiming your weapon in the right place.
- It sets the tone for the room – if you nail the first moment, you will instantly have the attention of all in attendance and if you can grab them in the beginning, you have a great chance of maintaining their attention and keep them away from their iphones.
- First impressions are lasting – If you start on the right note, any missteps later are more likely to be overlooked than if you start on the wrong note.
So if you don’t think you can nail the entire audition, nail the first moment. Most people will assume that you will be good in the rest if you can wow them in the beginning.
As always, good luck and aspire to be a hacktor.
