Hacktor Question:
Should I pay my agent even though they didn’t get me the job?
This is such a common mistake actors make. Actors that book something ‘on their own’, and don’t want to pay, even though they are represented at the time.
First off, if you read your contract, it probably says you need to pay them commission for everything you do regardless of where it came from.
Secondly we are probably not talking about a lot of money. So if you pay them, it will cost you little and go very far in making them feel good about you. By not paying them, you are setting up your relationship to be adversarial instead of cooperative.
Which do you think works better for actor/agent relations? Since they hold your destiny in their hands, do you really think you should argue over every nickel and dime? That is short term thinking at best, idiocy at worst.
Pay your agent, and show them you are out there hustling to put money in their pocket. Maybe then they will go that extra mile for you when it comes time for submissions.
Think like you are going to be doing business tomorrow, not just today.
